With the exception of two pinkish patches at the bend of the wing, the residue of the male’s feathers are black, with lighter brown edges that are increasingly worn absent as the chick ages, yet resulting in a uniform black appearance. The female has less outstanding plumage, with generally abolitionist feathers on the torso and head, and a hint of ruby-red pick on the breast. Immature red-breasted blackbirds correspond the female, but lack the ruby breast colour altogether, and have sinister streaked underparts .

I’ve had a couple calls lately trying to identify a new bird in the yard. The callers account them as red birds with a black heads. Not negro backstage like a chromatic Tanager, not citrus like a urban centre Oriole.

The tract maps given here are color-coded, with cowardly indicating the spend range, blueish indicating the winter range, and fleeceable indicating the year-round range. Some of the reach maps do not follow this color code, but it is not challenging to decrypt them. These are robust, seed-eating birds, with strong bills. The sexes usually have distinctive appearances; the family is titled for the red plumage (like that of a Catholic cardinal's vestments) of males of the type species, the Northern Cardinal.
